No Governance of Us without Us

“Nothing about us without us” has been a rallying cry of the disability rights movement since the 1990s. For Deliberate Democracy for Disability Empowerment, it means something more specific:

Outside of government, our not-for-profits that serve the disability community should have significant and prominent representation by the disability community itself. Disabled adults and parents of children with disabilities.

In one area, our public systems should be held to a higher standard – organizations that serve this disabled community should have a majority of their governing boards be members of the disabled community (disabled adults and parents of children with disabilities). In California, these are the state and local boards for IHSS, SELPA, and others.

In snkids.org, we’ve still got work to do on this. We’re reaching out to other parents of kids with disabilities and adults with disabilities so we can better represent our parent community and build connections and alliances with disabled adults. Let us know if you’re interested.
