No Governance of Us without Us
“Nothing about us without us” has been a rallying cry of the disability rights movement since the 1990s. For Deliberate Democracy for Disability Empowerment, it means something more specific:
- Disability advisory commissions for cities, counties, and other sizeable organizations.
- Disability and Special Education District Advisory Commissions for school districts.
- Active recruitment and involvement of disabled adults and parents of children with disabilities in all appointed commissions and elected offices.
In one area, our public systems should be held to a higher standard – organizations that serve this disabled community should have a majority of their governing boards be members of the disabled community (disabled adults and parents of children with disabilities). In California, these are the state and local boards for IHSS, SELPA, and others.
